Some vehicle owners frequently run out of gas and this is because they always operate their vehicles with little or no gas in the tank. The problem is they sometimes miscalculate and then they are stranded somewhere and they are left with no other option but call a gas delivery service or to walk to the nearest service station which is not only embarrassing but it’s also an unnecessary exercise. Even more problematic is the fact that some motor vehicles will struggle to start when they have been run until the point where the engine simply does not have sufficient gas to fire normally. Even should you put a gallon or more of gas into the tank, it will require a strong battery which will be able to turn the engine until the mechanical or electrical fuel pump has been able to pump that feel from the tank to the cylinder where it can be ignited. My vehicle is like that, once it has been run completely dry, some gas has to be poured down the carburetor, otherwise it will simply not start.
The first step, put in some gas
It will be a good idea to put at least one or 2 gallons of gas into the tank or at least enough gas to get you to the next gas station. Always remember to replace the gas cap before you start your motor vehicle. The next step will be to pump the gas pedal a couple of times before you turn the ignition key. This will help to distribute some of the gas to the areas where it is needed. Now you should turn the ignition on because this is necessary to prime the fuel injectors that is if your vehicle is making use of a fuel injection system. Patience may be required, because this process may require several minutes to complete. Now you can proceed to turn the ignition key all the way and to actually try to start the motor vehicle although it may be necessary to keep the key in that position for several seconds before ignition may actually take place.
If this is not successful
It may be necessary to wait an additional couple of minutes, it will be no use to keep on turning the key, if normal ignition does not take place, because this will only result in a flat vehicle battery. After a few minutes try the starting process again and if it still not successful it is advisable to wait for at least an hour before trying again. If all of this effort is still not producing the desired result it may be best to have the vehicle towed to a repair shop so that qualified technicians could pursue alternative solutions. Due to the fact that the vehicle has run out of gas, it may be possible that accumulated impurities in the tank has ended up in the gas lines, the fuel filter or even in the injectors or in the case of older vehicles in the jets of the carburetor. These problems will have to be resolved before normal ignition will be possible.
